During tensions between US-China relations, Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng’s rare speech at the Republican Party convention has received great attention. President Trump retweeted the nearly three-minute video on his Twitter account.
Chen Guangcheng, a human rights activist who became blind due to an illness at a young age. He self-learned law, and was once called a "barefoot lawyer" by the media. In 2012, Chen Guangcheng's fate triggered a Sino-US diplomatic incident. He escaped from house arrest in April of that year and fled all the way to the US Embassy in Beijing. He subsequently received political asylum from the United States and left China to study in the United States. Hillary Clinton, then US Secretary of State, is believed to have played an important diplomatic mediation role in the Chen Guangcheng incident.
In his speech, Chen Guangcheng publicly expressed support for Trump's approach to China relations. In Chinese language circles, Chen Guangcheng's speech has sparked some controversy. Most Chinese praised Chen Guangcheng for speaking very well. But there are also voices accusing Chen Guangcheng of "betraying the Democratic Party."
He responded: "I will also criticize the anti-human regime of the Chinese Communist Party if invited." Obviously, the Democratic Party does not have the same enthusiasm for Chen Guangcheng as the Republican Party.
