In a letter written this week and released late on Tuesday, Mr Crisp said the evidence he gave on August 26 to the public accounts and estimates committee that he regularly briefed Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville was incorrect.
He said he had identified three occasions when he told the committee that he gave Ms Neville regular updates on the establishment of Victoria's hotel quarantine program in March.
"I wish to correct this in acknowledgment that I did not brief the Minister for Police and Emergency Services throughout March 27 and 28, 2020, with regard to what was being planned," he wrote.
Mr Crisp released a statement on Wednesday afternoon saying he had chosen to correct the record to ensure it was accurate, after reviewing a draft transcript of the committee proceedings.
"This is a decision I have taken alone and it was not discussed with government ministers or their offices," he said.
Mr Crisp's backflip reflects a trend from the inquiry where Victoria's top public servants from the health, jobs and Premier's departments admitted they had not regularly briefed their ministers on issues with the hotels program.

David, 40, told Northants Live: "And I think Covid broke her to be honest.
"She couldn't get to visit my mum, because she's got breathing difficulties so couldn't leave the house to visit.
"My dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer, he's now got a tumour so can't travel, so lockdown has basically broke us all."
David said he felt like he had failed when he heard his sister had died.
Their older brother Barry had suffered from PTSD following a tour in Sierra Leone with the army.
He died aged 40.
