Two men yesterday were caned by religious police in Indonesia for gay sex.

Hundreds watched on, some filming with smartphones, as hooded individuals inflicted 82 lashes on them.

The punishment was decided upon by an Islamic court and carried out at a mosque in the city of Banda Aceh, the capital of the conservative province of Aceh.

The event was live streamed and marks the first time anti-homosexuality laws have been enforced in the province after they were introduced in the province in 2014.
