Hong Kong is ‘New Berlin’, reference to the cold war when Berlin was split along political ideologies. On May 28, US President Trump announced that US would take steps to sanction China when China announced imposing a national security law on Hong Kong. What's impact on the Beijing and the world?

1. On May 27, over 360 people were arrested in protests over the security law and other related laws in Hong Kong.

2. Hong Kong was handed back to China from British control in 1997, and both sides agreed to follow the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration and the Hong Kong Basic Law.

3.On May 28, China's parliament passed the Hong Kong National Security Law that criminalizes secession, subversion of State power, terrorist activities and interference by external forces.

4.Under the United States-Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992, Hong Kong is treated differently than mainland China by the US law. On May 29th, President Donald Trump announced that US would take steps to sanction.

5. Some analysts believe this is related to the results of last year's Hong Kong District Council elections.In the District Council election held on November 24 last year.The Legislative Council elections will be held in Hong Kong in September this year.

6. "one country, two systems" was brought by Deng Xiaoping, the second-generation leader of the CCP, which aimed to bring Taiwan into the Chinese system. Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen, who holds an anti-communist stance, is re-elected with the largest number of votes in Taiwan history.

7. China's increasing control over the city "affects not only our direct interests in Hong Kong but also the maintenance of the rules-based international order where legal and political commitments are to be respected," EU foreign affairs chief minister, Josep Borrell, said in a letter to the bloc's 27 foreign ministers.

8. Some people regard Hong Kong as the ‘New Berlin’, a reference to the cold war when Berlin was split along political ideologies. Some have compared the CCP's violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration to Hitler’s violation of the Treaty of Versailles in 1936 where Hitler sent German military into the demilitarized zone of Rhineland.
