The Xinjiang region in western China had been a mildly affected region during the first round of the virus outbreak. For several months, a total of just over 70 confirmed cases and three deaths had been reported. With the sudden discovery of an additional confirmed case in Urumqi on July 15, more than 800 confirmed cases had been reported by mid-August. With the exception of 2 in Changji, 1 in Kashgar, and 1 in Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, all cases were located in Urumqi.
Over the past few days, people in Xinjiang have been exposing the extreme lockdown measures on social media, showing some households having their doors tightly taped, others having holes drilled into the floor of their doorways to insert steel bars in order to block the doors; and others having their door handles tightly attached with wire to nuts fastened to the walls with seals affixed to the doors. Sealing up the doors has barred citizens from normal living activities like work, and the prices of daily necessities have risen significantly as well.
Since the entire territory of Xinjiang has been in lockdown, farmers are devastated because they are unable to sell the watermelons, grapes, and peaches they grow, even though they have a good harvest.
