The Hum by Dave Cullen

Listen, just listen, the world is a living breathing vessel,
it creeks and groans with sounds unseen,
and that’s what makes this earth so special

From your window you notice noises for which you easily account,
Chirping birds, the wind and traffic,
No mystery for these sounds to amount

Whether alone at home in silence brooding,
or among the din of city streets,
a steady stream of sounds intruding,
all measured and known in predicted beats

Bells and bikes and cars pass by,
you take no notice of where or why,
from beneath the earth the waters rush,
and soon run still into a quiet hush.

But then sometimes you lie awake,
the night surrounds you in contemplation,
far in the distance a minor quake,
a disturbing drone breaks concentration

For some it sickens, others it disturbs,
an unknown sound,
difficult to put into words

What is that noise just beyond explanation?
it blankets the night without cessation

Permeating daytime, droning on,
a diesel engine idling?
maybe, but - now it’s gone

Oh wait there it is, there it is again,
I hear it clearly now, now and then

From country hills and serene valleys,
to cityscapes and bustling alleys
They call it the Hum - an unsettling designation,
imposing and insidious, it begs explanation

What is it, where it is it?
Does it even exist?
I’m hearing something, that much I insist.

The Hum you say? Is it a hum? I’d call it a whine,
And what’s your theory? I’ll give you mine

Earth’s winds consume all of our sounds,
whips them up into a noise that confounds,
this hum is not of extraterrestrial design,
Nor is it a product of something more divine

The superstitious seek answers in the truly bizarre,
Aliens and demons, you know what they are,
Poor explanations, straw men that fill gaps,
But more enticing than logic and reason perhaps

Throughout our world we’ve left a trace,
technological remnants of the human race,
power lines and cables all vibrating,
creating new energy, constantly pulsating

Humanity echoes through the things we create,
leaving planet earth in a super charged state,
The winds compress, compound and bind,
all of the sounds we leave behind

So the hum is a sound that seems to emerge,
when humanities creations all converge

The hum is a powerful and uncontainable force,
a unifying energy from a human source,
Forget the conspiracies and remember what’s true,
The Hum is everything, everyone, it’s me and it’s you
