In May 2018 Ana Kriegel, a 14-year-old schoolgirl was lured from her home, brutally murdered and sexually assaulted in a derelict house in Lucan, near Dublin. The awful crime was all the more disturbing when her killers were revealed to be two 13 year old boys, now the youngest convicted murderers in the history of Ireland.

Anastasia "Ana" Kriegel was a Russian-Irish girl who was subject to a violent attack, murdered and sexually assaulted in late May 2018 in Lucan. Two boys, known only as Boy A and Boy B who were 13 years old at the time of Kriégel's death, were convicted of her murder, with one of the boys (Boy A) being further convicted of aggravated sexual assault.

The teenage killers will be offered fresh identities after jail, it's been revealed. Her 15-year-old murderers, identified in court only as Boy A and Boy B, will be able to change their names to help them start new lives as young men. The pair are to be given rehabilitative support similar to that afforded to Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, the young killers of Liverpool toddler, James Bulger.

Devastated Patric and Geraldine Kriegel still have many unanswered questions surrounding the 14-year-old’s death, close family friend TD Catherine Murphy said. She told how even after the six-week trial they are none the wiser as to why they targeted the teenager.

Ms Murphy added: “Remorse, and having answers to those questions, is obviously something they would want to see. Even after that trial that went on for just over six weeks there are still two very different stories.”

Ms Murphy said: “It will never be over for them, that’s the reality and they know that. Nothing will bring Ana back.

“Geraldine made it very clear in her victim impact statement – that devastation. She put it better than anyone could put it.

“The community have been incredibly supportive and also very respectful in that people have not overwhelmed them. That is very much appreciated. “She was a stunning, beautiful girl.”

Murder verdict:
The two accused were found guilty of murder on 18 June 2019. The jury had deliberated for over fourteen hours. After the verdict, Mr. Justice Paul McDermott thanked the jury members and relieved them from jury duty for the rest of their lives.

Prosecuting counsel said there were places available at Oberstown Detention Centre. The judge remanded them in custody and adjourned sentencing to 15 July. Sentencing was further
adjourned to October in order that psychological assessments could take place.

Sentencing:
The sentencing took place on 5 November 2019. Boy A was sentenced to life with a review period after twelve years for her murder. Additionally he was sentenced to twelve years for aggravated sexual assault. This sentence is to run alongside the murder sentence. His co-accused, known as Boy B, was sentenced to fifteen years for Ana’s murder. This will be reviewed after a period of eight years.

Outside the court, Ana's father Patric said "forever is not long enough" in response to the sentences. The boys will be offered new identities after release.
