It is widely claimed, and popularly supposed to be true, that the epidemic of Covid-19 which struck Britain in 2020 and 2021 was an unprecedented disaster in terms of illness and death. In fact, we need go back only fifty years to find a worse epidemic; one which has been all but forgotten.
