SECURITY ALERT SENT OUT BY THE US EMBASSY IN SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA
From: acssanjose@state.gov
Date: Fri, Jul 6, 2018 at 8:31 AM
Subject: Security Alert: Travel to Nicaragua
Security Alert – U.S. Embassy San Jose; July 6, 2018
Location:  Nicaragua and its border areas

Event:  Roadblocks are present throughout Nicaragua, including the border crossings with Costa Rica, making overland travel unpredictable; road travel is even more dangerous after dark, when the likelihood of violence at roadblocks, and other crime, increases.  Nicaraguan authorities may deny entry to travelers attempting to cross into Nicaragua via land.  The U.S. Embassies in Managua and San Jose cannot intervene in these situations.
The Department of State issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory for Nicaragua on June 8, advising U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to Nicaragua due to crime, civil unrest, and limited healthcare availability.
Actions to Take:
· Reconsider travel to Nicaragua.
· Read the Department of State’s Nicaragua Travel Advisory and the entry/exit requirements in the country information page.
· Arrive at border crossing points well before dark if you travel to Nicaragua via land from Costa Rica.
· Monitor local media for updates.
· Enroll with the U.S. Embassy in Managua via the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.
Assistance:
• See the State Department’s travel website for the Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Costa Rica Country Specific Information.
• Contact the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, located at Calle 98 Vía 104, Pavas, San José, at +506 2519-2000, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The after-hours emergency number for U.S. citizens is +506 2519-2000 and then asking to be transferred to the Duty Officer
• Call 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada or 1-202-501-4444 from other countries from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
