Polly Tommey sets out to help Samantha Sykes, a 25-year-old single mum struggling to cope with the strain of looking after her 4½-year-old son Mickey, who has autism. Sam describes Mickey's normal development during his first year of life, and how this was accompanied by a string of illnesses, followed by his transition into someone completely unrecognisable as his autism became more noticeable. Sam also talks about Mickey's dietary problems, and the difficulties of balancing his troubles with those of raising him and his two siblings.
