Handheld technology deployed by British police are allowing officers to identify people they take into custody in under a minute by scanning their fingerprints.

The system compares collected fingerprints with the 12 million records contained in the national criminal and immigration databases. When a match is found, it will return the individual’s name, birthdate, and other identifying information.

Although geared for suspected criminals, the system which links the handheld scanner to an officer’s smartphone, could also be used when someone is unconscious, or in need to immediate medical care. It could also be used to identify deceased people.

Police officials say it will only be used when a person’s identity cannot be determined by other means, such as when identification documents aren’t available, or when a person is believed to be giving false information. Also, they claim fingerprint data used by the system are automatically deleted from the handheld scanning device once the databases have been searched.

WIRED UK magazine reports the system is undergoing a trial with the West Yorkshire Police for three weeks before it is rolled out to all officers.
