Hundreds of undocumented immigrants have been arrested in the United States in the first round of anti-immigration raids under US President Donald Trump.

According to US immigration authorities, the recent raids and arrests are routine and no different than those in the past. However, a dramatic surge in the number of detentions over the past few days tells a different story. Two weeks ago, Trump signed an executive order that made it possible to arrest undocumented migrants who are only charged with criminal offenses. This is a major departure from the Obama era, when only undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions were subject to arrest and deportation. An estimated eleven-million undocumented migrants live in the US.
