Face coverings should be worn by university students and staff in communal spaces and corridors as part of measures to contain the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant, according to the Department for Education (DfE) guidance.

Higher education institutions may also want to consider using face masks in “workshops, laboratories, offices, libraries, teaching rooms and lecture halls” especially where social distancing is difficult to maintain, the DfE said.

The guidance says: “We recommend that face coverings should be worn by students, staff and adult visitors when moving around the premises such as in corridors and communal spaces.”

Professor Carl Heneghan: "We're in a better place than ever in terms of the impact of this disease, yet we're panicking like we've never seen it before. The government doesn't trust us and thinks we need to be treated like primary school children."
