Three weeks after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida implemented the red flag law which prevents anyone who is deemed as a threat from owning a firearm.

The law has been utilized 3,500 times since it went into effect and is supported by both the Republican and Democratic Parties. However the question is how effective is it???

There are numerous instances of individuals having their guns removed from their possession by court order who have still managed to acquire a new gun utilized in various crimes. The law is also used inconsistently across various cities and counties in Florida.

Prior to the enactment of the law it was difficult for law enforcement to get guns removed from individuals who posed as a threat to themselves or someone else.

However critics of the law say that it violates individuals constitutional rights including the right to bear arms. Plus because the ruling of the red flag law is not a criminal proceeding, most low income defendants cannot afford to have counsel present. The request to get the red flag law goes before a civil court.
