The Chinese army began the official part of military exercises near Taiwan and reported the successful live firing of ballistic missiles in the eastern part of the Taiwan Strait. The exercises will last until August 7.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry called the exercises "a necessary and legitimate response" to Nancy Pelosi's visit, which "is directed against provocateurs and aimed at protecting China's sovereignty."
Taiwan's Foreign Ministry accused the Chinese authorities of trying to change the status quo in the region. No country can use the visit of a foreign official as a pretext for provocations, representatives for the Foreign Ministry of Taiwan said.
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) fired multiple ballistic missiles into waters near Taiwan. Multiple Dongfeng ballistic missiles launched by the PLA from 1:56 p.m. landed in waters near northeastern and southwestern parts of the island, no further details were provided.
