According to U.S. media, The United States has formally submitted its withdrawal from the World Health Organization on July 7. The White House has notified congressional lawmakers that the official removal from WHO will take effect in July 2021.

Since the outbreak in January, the U.S. has repeatedly asked to allow experts into China to investigate the outbreak, but China has refused. Until June 30, half a year after the outbreak, WHO announced it was sending experts to China to investigate the origin of the coronavirus.

The U.S. had been the top contributor to the organization with approximately $450 million a year. Trump announced in April that the US would freeze funding and if WHO did not undergo major substantive reforms, the freeze would be permanent. China meanwhile pays approximately $50 million a year -- despite on May 18, Beijing announced a $2 billion injection of funds.

Despite the lack of investigation, the WHO Secretary-General has been defending China and has publicly praised China's work on pandemic and the Chinese President Xi Jinping on many occasions. During his term of office, he has refused to allow Taiwan to join the WHO for various reasons.
