Speaking in the Rose Garden today, US President Donald Trump announced that he has signed an order to end preferential treatment for Hong Kong. He also signed the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, the bipartisan legislation passed unanimously in Congress last week, to impose sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials, businesses, and banks that harmed Hong Kong’s autonomy.

The order terminates all special privileges, economic treatment, and export of sensitive technology that Hong Kong enjoyed for 23 years under The U.S.- Hong Kong Policy Act. Trump also said when asked by a reporter that he had no plans to speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

There are still about 1,300 US companies operating in Hong Kong. The immediate impact on these firms is yet unknown. BBC also said that, US citizens who currently enjoy visa-free travel to Hong Kong could also face much tougher Chinese visa restrictions.

On July 13, China responded to US visa bans on several Chinese Officials who involved in serious human rights abuses, by announcing sanctions on several US politicians, including Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Sam Brownback, and Chris Smith, who actively criticize the Chinese Communist Party. Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the measures would take effect immediately, banning them from entering the country and freeze their property in China. She also condemned Australia of suspending the extradition agreement with Hong Kong and granting five-year visas to Hong Kong workers and students, claiming Australia interfered with China’s internal affairs.
