Beginning in the afternoon of July 16, Google trends showed "quitting the party" as a hot search term.

At 1:00 a.m. on July 17, the term reached peak popularity and indicated that the searches were mostly from mainland China. On the morning of the 17th, searches for "The Epoch Times quitting the party" increased rapidly and reached its peak at 12:44. Data shows that searches are primarily from the United States, with some from Canada. The spike in the search for "quitting the party" is directly related to a report published by the New York Times on the 15th.

The New York Times reported on the 15th that the Trump administration was drafting a presidential proclamation considering a total ban on members of the Chinese Communist Party and their families from coming to the United States. Members of the Communist Party's military and executives of state-owned enterprises are also among those subject to the restrictions. The announcement could also authorize the government to revoke visas and deport CCP members and their families already in the United States. According to the Trump administration's internal assessment, a restriction on all CCP members and their families would be equivalent to banning up to 270 million people from entering the country.
