When looking back at history, Washington broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and established diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1979. The United States has long pursued a "One China" policy. In August, David R. Stilwel, the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs, told a web conference that Washington's "One China" policy is different from Beijing's "One China principle".

On November 15, China's CCTV blasted U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a rare and intense display of strong language. The People's Daily Overseas Edition published an op-ed, calling Pompeo "apocalyptic, arrogant, ignorant, sinister, misleading, disruptive, extremely sinister," and more, because of his speech over Taiwan.
